The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD) in cooperation with Philippine Association of Medical Journal Editors (PAMJE) Inc. and Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) is organizing the 16th National Medical Writing Workshop and 9th Writeshop for Young Researchers on 12-13 August 2019 in Cagayan De Oro. The workshop aims to help young investigators in health and health social sciences acquire practical knowledge and skills in preparing a scientific article for publication in a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. Successful applicants will be granted free workshop registration, accommodation and meals during the workshop, and will be assigned to a mentor-facilitator who will guide them in preparing their articles for a brief presentation.

Requirements for participants

The workshop is designed for a maximum of forty (40) researchers in health sciences and health social sciences, aged 40 years old and below, who have a research project completed not more than 2 years ago and have drafted a publication-ready manuscript of maximum 2,500 - 3,000 words, formatted for submission to a scholarly biomedical journal. Note that thesis, dissertations, and technical reports in original format and length do not qualify. 
The selected draft manuscripts will be reviewed and revised during the workshop, based on the lectures and exercises, under the guidance of the faculty and mentor – facilitators. All participants are expected to present a 7-minute power point summary of their revised manuscripts on the second day of the workshop, and agree to submit the article to an appropriate scholarly peer-reviewed journal within three (3) months after the workshop.

Department of Science and Technology- Philippine Council for Health Research and Development celebrated its 37th anniversary concurrence with the discussion of the issues and the opportunities that confronts Health Research in Industry 4.0 at PICC, Pasay on March 14, 2019.

Industry 4.0 is believed to bring international experts to showcase what others are doing under it, particularly in the field of Health.

The academe, policymakers, private sectors, and civil society representatives are the expected participants to converse on how Philippines can take advantage of the opportunities and manage the risks emerging from Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIR).

Additionally, CVHRDC member Dr. Eladio S. Gumabay presented the CVHRDC-RICUC 2018 Accomplishment during its preconference.

Furthermore, CVMC- Research Ethics Review Committee and RIITMC- Institutional Review Board were officially recognized as Level 2 Research Ethics Committee by the Philippine Health Research Ethics Board (PHREB).

Meanwhile, 13 regions competed for the best presenter for three-minute pitch of policy makers wherein, Dr. Guia G. Comillas represented CVHRDC with the policy entitled, "Sustain the AIDERS Program for a better Philippines", which is an assessment of the Department of Health-Aiders Program and Performance of TB Aiders in Region 2.

The Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium ( CVHRDC) supports the conduct of The Philippine Association for Laboratory Animal Science (PALAS) 31st  Annual Scientific Conference with the theme “Advancing Refinement for Better Quality Research” on May 22-24, 2019 at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Ortigas, Pasig City.

The consortium invites researchers, research assistants and students within the region to participate in the one-day pre-conference and two-day conference which aim to further educate participants on the current trends and issues in biomedical research using laboratory animals. Furthermore,  research enthusiasts are also encouraged to submit their research entries for the Oral and Poster Presentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Researches to be presented must be original, unpublished, and completed within the last two (2) years.
  1. Ideally, the Presenter should be the First Author. If the First Author is not available, the presenter must be at least one of the co-authors of the paper.
  1. Presenter/s should be present during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference.
  1. Pre-registration is required for presenters.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACT

  1. In the body of the email, please indicate the following: Presentation Title, Author/s: (underline the presenter’s name), Institution, Correspondents’ email address. Indicate also if the presenting author is an undergraduate student, graduate student, postdoc or professional.
  1. All abstracts should be written in English following the format in the PALAS2019 Abstract Template.
  1. The PALAS Scientific Committee will screen the submitted abstracts deemed for oral or poster presentation.
  1. Selected abstracts for poster presentation will be classified under two categories: 1) Student and 2) Professional.
  1. The corresponding author will be notified of acceptance and schedule of presentation thru email.
  1. Submit also a one-page curriculum vitae or biography of the presenter.

AWARDS

  1. Oral presentations and Posters will be judged during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference by Technical Evaluators chosen by the PALAS Scientific Committee.
  1. The top three (3) best oral and top three (3) best student and professional poster presentation winners will be chosen by the Technical Evaluators.
  1. The decision of the Oral and Poster Technical Evaluators is final.
  1. The winners will be announced, and their certificates and cash prizes will be given during the Awarding Ceremony at the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference.

FAILURE OF AUTHOR/S TO PRESENT THEIR WORK DURING THE CONFERENCE

  1. If for any reason, the authors will not be present during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference, they should provide advance notice on or before April 30, 2019.
  1. If the First Author will be unable to present his/her work, s/he MUST submit a request for approval of a co-author listed in the abstract as substitute presenter.
  1. If none of the co-authors can take the First Author’s place, a letter of Abstract Withdrawal MUST be submitted.
  1. Failure to provide advanced notice will result in rejection of the First Author's abstract submission for the succeeding PALAS Annual Scientific Conferences

APPENDIX A.

GUIDELINES IN THE PREPARATION OF POWERPOINT AND ORAL PRESENTATION FOR THE 2019 PALAS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

Length and Format of PowerPoint Presentation:

  1. Presentation must be no longer than 15 minutes.
  1. Presentation must be in MS Office Powerpoint 2007 or later version (landscape orientation).
  1. Font size should be large enough to be seen clearly at the rear of the conference hall.
  1. Product endorsements are not allowed during the scientific session. If a commercial product is used in the study, it must be referred to by its generic name (no brand names) in the abstract and during the presentation.

 Day of Oral Presentation

  1. The presenting author must be present at the assigned date and time.
  1. Please register at the speakers’ table upon arrival at the venue to be provided with an ID and conference kit.
  1. Submit a soft copy of the powerpoint presentation to the Scientific Conference Chair before 8:00 A.M. on the day of presentation (presentation may also be emailed ahead of time). Make sure a backup copy is at hand. Should you wish to review your presentation please ask the protocol person for assistance.
  1. The presenter is alloted 15 minutes for oral presentation and 5 minutes for question and answer. A protocol officer will assist you during the presentation.
  1. The Technical Evaluators will be present during the presentation.
  1. Presenter will be given a Certificate of Paper Presentation during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference.

APPENDIX B.

GUIDELINES IN THE PREPARATION AND PRESENTATION OF POSTER FOR THE 2019 PALAS SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE

I.  Poster Preparation

  1. Poster should be on one sheet and measuring 90 cm (width) x 120 cm (length).
  1. Contents of poster should be divided into topics but must fit the specified poster panel size.
  1. Poster should include the title, names of author/s, affiliate institution/s of author/s. All information should be written in Times New Roman.

       4. The text, tables, figures, etc. should be clear enough to be read from a distance of two meters.

       5.Make headings: INTRODUCTION, OBJECTIVES, MATERIALS AND METHODS, RESULTS, CONCLUSION, REFERENCES AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.

Poster Presentation

  1. Double sided tape and technical equipment will be available for the mounting of posters. 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference Staff will be available to guide you. But they will NOT be responsible for putting up your poster.
  1. DO NOT write or paint on the poster boards.
  1. DO NOT use nails, push pins, screws, or any tools that will puncture the poster boards.
  1. Posters will be on display at the Convention Centre from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference.
  1. Please refer to the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference Proceedings for the poster board number assigned to you.
  1. Please use the board that displays the number assigned to you.
  1. Please be present next to your poster during coffee breaks and after lunch as much as possible to answer any question from participants and technical evaluators.
  1. Schedule of dismantling of poster is at 5:30 P.M on May 24, 2019.
  1. Presenter will be given a Certificate of Poster Presentation during the 2019 PALAS Scientific Conference.
