The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office II thru the Cagayan Valley Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC), recently held a Basic Research Ethics Training (BRET) on May 2-3, 2023, via Zoom.
The BRET sought to encourage responsible and ethical research practices among scientists and researchers in the Cagayan Valley Region. It also provided a platform for participants to discuss and learn about the ethical principles, guidelines, and regulations that govern research activities, particularly in the fields of science and technology.
During the two-day training, Dr. Ruben C. Mendoza of Ateneo de Manila and Dr. Fred Guillergan of Western Visayas State University led various sessions, including lectures, case studies, and group discussions. Topics covered included informed consent, confidentiality, privacy, and the protection of human subjects. The training also highlighted the importance of integrity, honesty, and accountability in research, emphasizing the need for transparency and openness in reporting research findings.
According to CVHRDC Executive Director Dr. Julius T. Capili, the training was crucial in ensuring that research operations in the region are conducted ethically and with the highest level of integrity.
"The Basic Research Ethics Training is an important step in ensuring that the research activities in our region are guided by ethical principles and values,” said Dr. Virginia G. Bilgera, DOST-02 Regional Director.
“It is our hope that through this training, we can develop a culture of responsible and ethical research in the Cagayan Valley Region," she added.
Selected participants of the BRET were primarily composed of CVHRDC committee members and others from various academic and research institutions in the Cagayan Valley Region.
Overall, the Basic Research Ethics Training serves as a reminder that ethical conduct is a critical aspect of research, and researchers must adhere to the highest standards of integrity to maintain public trust and confidence in their work.
