The Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) successfully conducted their 4th Annual Health Research Conference dubbed " Breaking Health Disparities, Bridging Health Equity and Building Resilient Communities thru Health Research and Innovation" staged at Isabela State University- Cauayan Campus last November 27-29, 2018.

The three-day activity aimed to promote the advancement of knowledge and encourage the continuing education of researchers/students/teachers in research and innovation in health that will empower and transform communities in the region.

Three speakers namely Dr. Reygene M. Caratiquit, Ms. Maria Jasmine R. Tagudar and Dr. Danilo Antonio A. Alejandro have discussed the following topics:

1. Understanding Equity and Equality in Health

2.Mental Health: A Growing Public Health Dilemma

3. Research Ethics: A Tool in Enhancing Quality of Health Researches

Also, the activity aimed to showcase completed health and health-related researches during the Poster Exhibit and Oral Presentation paneled by Dr. Noel R. Juban and Dr. Jennifer M. Nailes. Furthermore, it encouraged and inspired young and budding researchers to write research proposals that will address the current gaps in the health system.

Said conference was pasrticipated by representatives from Isabela State University- Cauayan Campus, Echague Campus, Ilagan Campus, Cagayan State University- Andrews Campus, Carig Campus, St. Louis University Tuguegarao (USLT), Integrated Midwives Association of the Philippines (IMAP) and Quirino State University (QSU).

Ethical Research Awareness, raised in Health Students

Over hundred ISU-Cauayan Health Students were benefited and raised their awareness on the forum on "Research Ethics as a Tool in Enhancing Quality of Health Researches" discussed by Vice-Chair,VRH-IRB Dr. Danilo Antonio A. Alejandro at Food Laboratory Function Hall, ISU-Cauayan Campus, Isabela.

Dr. Alejandro highlighted the first things to consider before conducting an experiment or research, like the voluntary consent of the subject, its social relevance, and qualification of the scientists, and adequacy of the facilities to be used.

"All researches should be ethically sound", pressed Dr. Alejandro.

He said that regardless of the social benefits of the research, no human being must be put in harm particularly the vulnerable subjects who are the children, pregnant, prisoners, elders, and the persons with disabilities.

Moreover, in the conduct of the experiment or research "assent and consent" is required beforehand.

Meanwhile, he advised the future health researchers to make their researches and studies circulate in a publication if they want to be known internationally.

Health Equity, raised among CVHRDC members

“The absence of avoidable or remediable differences among groups of people, whether those groups are defined socially, economically, demographically or geographically.” (World Health Organization) shared First speaker, Dr. Reygene M. Caratiquit to the participants of the 4th Annual Health Research Conference in ISU-Cauayan City, November 27, 2018.

Municipal Health Officer Dr. Caratiquit of Dinapigue, Isabela distinguished the difference between health equality and equity.

“Equity is giving everyone what they need while Equality is treating everyone the same”, quoted Dr. Caratiquit.

Moreover, he encouraged the participants to as well apply equity in their researches by giving more urgency to conduct R&D to the people who are deprived of comfort and health services particularly in the challenged areas.

To promote the advancement of knowledge and encourage the continuing education of researchers/ students/teachers, in research and innovation in health that will empower and transform communities in the region, the Department of Science and Technology Regional office 2 (DOST-02) thru the Cagayan Valley Health Research Development Consortium (CVHRDC) will be having its 4th Annual Health Research Conference with the theme :"Breaking Health Disparities, Bridging Health Equity, and Building Resilient Communities thru Health Research and  Innovation" on November 27-29, 2018 at Isabela State University- Cauayan Campus, Cauayan City, Isabela.
