THE LEADERS IN INNOVATION FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Filipino researchers who qualify for the LIF program will spend a focused period of training and coaching in the United Kingdom. They will attend master classes given by Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering and enjoy opportunities for international networking.

The minimum requirement for researchers to qualify for LIF 5: Their technology should have received prior funding from the Philippine Department of Science and Technology.

A postgraduate certificate program established in 2014, LIF creates international networks of innovators, expert mentors, and technology entrepreneurs. On their return to the Philippines, LIF Fellows continue to benefit from ongoing training and support to push their commercialization plan forward.

Leaders in Innovation Fellowship is part of the Newton Agham Programme, a collaboration between the UK and Philippine governments to bolster science, research, and innovation. The LIF program is delivered by the Royal Academy of Engineering in partnership with the Philippine Department of Science and Technology and the Asian Institute of Management.

WHAT IS NEWTON AGHAM?

The Newton Agham (Science) Programme is a collaboration between the UK and the Philippines to advance science, research, and innovation. The UK Government, through its embassy in the Philippines, works with UK delivery partners and Philippine science and innovation institutions to implement programs that strengthen science and innovation capacity.

Partner institutions include the Department of Science and Technology and the Commission on Higher Education. UK delivery partners working in the Philippines include the British Council, Medical Research Council, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Research Councils UK, and the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Globally, the UK government launched the Newton Fund in 2014, a £735-million fund to support science and innovation partnerships with emerging knowledge economies. The Fund is part of the UK’s Official Development Assistance and covers three broad categories of activity.

People – Increasing capacity in science and innovation, individually and institutionally, in partner countries
Programs – Research collaborations on development topics
Translation – Creating collaborative solutions to development challenges and strengthening innovation systems

HOW IT WORKS

LIF is a multi-phase program delivered over 12 months. It is a multi-sectoral partnership among top institutions in the UK and the Philippines in the fields of science, innovation, and leadership management.

The Fellowship is open to all academic researchers across the country and Technology Transfer Officers with DOST-funded technology, who are in the process of developing a business plan for their technology or innovation. While the most ideal candidates are those who have tested their idea in the market, candidates who are on the cusp of commercialization may also be considered.

The Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will accept applications from scientists, academic researchers, and technology innovators across the country. A DOST planning council, the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development, will be the primary implementing and monitoring arm for the duration of the program.

European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants - Call Just Opened. ASEAN Researchers Encouraged to Apply

Are you a talented early-career scientist who has already produced excellent supervised work, is ready to work independently and shows potential to be a research leader? The ERC Starting Grant could be for you.

Who can apply?

Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD(Extensions are possible under certain circumstances — see the latest ERC Work Programme), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal

What proposals are eligible?

Criteria

Applications can be made in any field of research. The ERC's grants operate on a 'bottom-up' basis without predetermined priorities.

Location

Research must be conducted in a public or private research organisation (known as a Host Institution/HI). It could be the HI where the applicant already works, or any other HI located in one of the EU Member States (see also eligibility of UK legal entities) or Associated Countries

Host Institution

Applications for an ERC grant must be submitted by a single Principal Investigator (PI) in conjunction with and on behalf of their Host Institution, called the applicant legal entity.

Grants are awarded to the Host Institution with the explicit commitment that this institution offers appropriate conditions for the Principal Investigator independently to direct the research and manage its funding for the duration of the project.

Any type of legal entity, including universities, research centres and undertakings can host the PI and his/her team. Legally the host institution must be based in one of the EU Member States, or one of the associated countries.

The PI does not necessarily need to be working at the host institution at the time when the proposal is submitted. However, a mutual agreement and the host institution’s commitment on how the relationship will be established are necessary, should the proposal be successful.

Team

ERC grants support projects carried out by an individual researcher who can employ researchers of any nationality as team members. It is also possible to have one or more team members located in a non-European country. Vacancies for team members interested in joining an ERC led research project, can be published on the Euraxess-Jobs portal.

Initiatives, under the form of 'Implementing Arrangements', exist for ERC-funded teams in Europe to host non-European talented scientists. Find out more about the agreements.

How much?

Starting Grants may be awarded up to € 1.5 million for a period of 5 years. (pro rata for projects of shorter duration). However, an additional € 0.5 million can be made available to cover eligible “start-up” costs for researchers moving from a third country to the EU or an associated country and/or the purchase of major equipment and/or access to large facilities.

An ERC grant can cover up to 100% of the total eligible direct costs of the research plus a contribution of 25% of the total eligible costs towards indirect costs.

Training Modules in Research Methods Courses Standardized

CEBU CITY- All Regional Health Research and Development Consortia (RHRDC) attended the Regional Consultation on the Standardization of Training Modules Used in Basic Research Methods Courses commissioned by DOST-PCHRD led by Dr. Ophelia M. Mendoza in collaboration with Symmetrix Research Consultancy Co. from September 4- 5, 2018 at the Golden Prince Hotel and Suites, Cebu City.

The objectives of the module were a). To conduct an inventory of training modules and designs currently used by RHRDCs in conducting the Basic Research Methods Course for its members; b.) To hold a Regional Consultative Workshop with the RHRDCs; c.)To develop the standardized module of Basic Research Methods (BRM) and the accompanying Teacher's Guide on the Use of the BRM Module, using as inputs the results of the inventory and the Regional Consultation conducted among RHRDCs; and d.)To test and finalize the standardized module by using them as training materials in an actual conduct of a Basic Research Methods Training and a Training of Trainers.

The outputs of the workshop will serve as a basis for the improvement of the standardized module of Basic Research Methods for the various RHRDC.
