CEBU CITY- All Regional Health Research and Development Consortia (RHRDC) attended the Regional Consultation on the Standardization of Training Modules Used in Basic Research Methods Courses commissioned by DOST-PCHRD led by Dr. Ophelia M. Mendoza in collaboration with Symmetrix Research Consultancy Co. from September 4- 5, 2018 at the Golden Prince Hotel and Suites, Cebu City.

 The objectives of the module were a). To conduct an inventory of training modules and designs currently used by RHRDCs in conducting the Basic Research Methods Course for its members; b.) To hold a Regional Consultative Workshop with the RHRDCs; c.)To develop the standardized module of Basic Research Methods (BRM) and the accompanying Teacher's Guide on the Use of the BRM Module, using as inputs the results of the inventory and the Regional Consultation conducted among RHRDCs; and d.)To test and finalize the standardized module by using them as training materials in an actual conduct of a Basic Research Methods Training and a Training of Trainers.

The outputs of the workshop will serve as a basis for the improvement of the standardized module of Basic Research Methods for the various RHRDC.

Meanwhile, the Cagayan Valley health Research Development Consortium (CVHRDC) was represented by Ms. Miriam D. Macutay- CVHRDC Capacity Building Committee Chair, Dr. Melfei E. Buhingan- CVHRDC Research Management Committee Chair, and Ms. Clyde Beth B. Caraang- CVHRDC Project Staff.

Through the initiative of Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) in collaboration with Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development, the recent 12th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week Celebration with the theme “Research and Innovation for Equity in Health”, from the 6th to 9th of August  2018 in CAP John Hay, Trade, Baguio City, brought together member institutions, Research enthusiasts, Health providers, Research Ethics Committee from across the country.

The various sessions and parallel discussions addressed the current situation, challenges, and advancements related to improving health and equity through research and innovations.

 Updates on how to improve the health status, productivity and quality of life of every Filipino were also presented.

The CVHRDC had an exemplary performance in the said event. Dr. Melfei E. Buhingan- CVHRDC Research Management Committee Chair received Technical Review Board Manual, Ms. Joyce Marie H. Kimayong from SMU ranked third during the Poster Exhibit Contest- Student Category with her study entitled “Antioxidant, Anti-inflammatory, and Anti-tumor Properties of Mani- manian (Arachis pintoi) Leaf Crude Extract”, while; Mr. Eladio Martin S. Gumabay , of USLT is a finalist during the Poster Exhibit Contest- Professional Category with his paper “Leadership Skills of Nurses on Patient Safety Culture in a Tertiary Hospital in Tuguegarao City”.

With this, the CVHRDC vowed to continuously support innovative ideas for health to promote and develop the life of community in the region.

 

 

 

The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development presented the Balik Scientist Program (BSP) during the Innovation Forum of the 2018 Regional Science and Technology Week held at the Municipal Gymnasium, Gonzaga, Cagayan on August 14, 2018.

Dr. Carol M. YorobeDr. Carol M. Yorobe, Undersecretary for S&T services addressed a message to the participants that focused on the importance and impact of science and technology to our community.

Meanwhile, Ms. Wilma Santos, BSP-PCHRD Coordinator, started her presentation by orienting the participants on BSP. She also presented the draft IRR for the Balik Scientist Act of 2018. She engaged the participants in a workshop on the improvement of the draft BSP IRR.

There were about 200 attendees coming from different provinces in the region which included Regional Line Agencies (DepED) State Universities (CSU, ISU), Local Government Units and Private Sectors (FILFOOD Products).

Republic Act 11035 also known as the Balik Scientist Act mandates the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to invite Filipino scientists to return to the Philippines to fill in the gaps in scientific and technological expertise in the country. The program aims to strengthen the scientific and technological human resources of the academe, public and private institutions, including locally registered enterprises in order to promote knowledge sharing and accelerate the flow of new technologies into the country.

 

 

 -   Dr. Portia Marcelo

Dr. Portia Marcelo obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of the Philippines Manila and her Master in Public Health at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore, USA. She is currently an Associate Professor in community medicine, social medicine, and global health at the College of Medicine and Philippine General Hospital, UP Manila. She is currently the Director of the National Telehealth Center which spearheaded several pioneering eHealth innovations such as the National Telehealth Service Program, Real-time Monitoring of Maternal and Child Health Indicators through the Community Health Information Tracking System or rCHITS, and the RxBox, a biomedical telemedicine device aimed to provide smarter care in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas in the Philippines.
