Unveiling Strategic Outlook at CVHRDC 2nd Quarter Assembly

June 23, 2023 - Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) thru the Department of Science and Technology Region 02 (DOST-R02) successfully conducted its Second Quarter Meeting via ZOOM.
The meeting served as a platform for comprehensive discussions on key achievements, upcoming activities, monitoring, giving updates, and strategies to address concerns. Here are the highlights of the meeting:
1. Accomplishment Report for 2nd Quarter: The chair/cochair or a representative from each 5 committees presented their accomplishments based on the approved workplan highlighting initiatives and performance.

2. Status of 8 Regional Research Funded Projects: The meeting provided a platform to review the progress of on-going funded researches. Project leaders and researchers presented their findings, and challenges faced during the implementation.

3.Plotting of Upcoming Activities for 3rd Quarter: Looking ahead, the meeting focused on planning and strategizing for the upcoming 3rd quarter. Several key activities, projects, and events were discussed and mapped out, ensuring a proactive approach to meeting consortium objectives.

4. Update on SEC Registration and PHREB Level 1 Accreditation: Key updates and requirements were discussed, emphasizing the importance of meeting regulatory standards and establishing a solid foundation for future endeavors.

5. Proposed Catch-Up Plans for Unaccomplished Activities for the 2nd Quarter:Acknowledging the importance of addressing any unaccomplished activities, the meeting focused on identifying the root causes and developing effective catch-up plans. Through collaborative brainstorming and constructive discussions, strategies were formulated to ensure the timely completion of pending tasks.

The 2nd quarter meeting concluded with a renewed sense of purpose, determination, and shared commitment to consortium's success. To conclude it all, CVHRDC is taking its footsteps to aid the thirst of Region 2 in finding solutions to health problems and provide S&T services in the locality.

CVHRDC Integrates Theory and Practice through Laboratory Exploration

The Cagayan Valley Health Research Consortium concluded the two-day "Training on Animal Handling and Salik-Lakbay to Animal Laboratories" on June 16, 2023 at Cagayan State University, Carig Campus.

In the morning, Dr. Abelardo P. Bas-Ong and Ms. Mary Ann M. Santos facilitated the hands-on training including the proper handling of animals, injecting anesthesia, techniques in drug administration, different sites in biological sample collection, demonstration of basic necropsy and showed slides of prepared histopathological samples.

Meanwhile, in collaboration with the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care-Cagayan Valley Herbal Processing Plant (PITAHC-CVHPP), Plant Manager Mr. Brian B. Castrence led the afternoon's Lakbay-Aral which had given chance to participants the firsthand exposure to the integration of traditional and alternative healthcare practices and animal facility usage.

To further enrich the experience, Chief Dr. Gerly T. Zulueta of DA-Cagayan Valley Integrated Agricultural Laboratory (DA-CVIAL) welcomed the party in their agency as she showed them the different automated equipments and techniques in animal agriculture that would enhance productivity and sustainability.

By blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications, the event successfully equipped the participants with the essential S&T skills and understanding on animal care and welfare.

DOST to Equip Participants for Effective Animal Handling

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office II thru the initiative of the Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) successfully conducted the Day 1 Training on Animal Handling and Salik-Lakbay to Animal Laboratories, June 15, 2023.

The participants, researchers, and medical practitioners were warmly welcomed as it was hosted by the Cagayan State University - Carig Campus, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan.

The training aimed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed for proper animal handling and management in research and laboratory settings and to promote ethical care and use of experimental species for scientific research and testing.

Dr. Julius T. Capili, CVHRDC Executive Director, acknowledged the participants during the preliminaries and warmly welcomed by CEO of CSU-Carig Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez.

While Ms. Reichell Ann P. Refuerzo, Regional Project Officer of CVHRDC from PCHRD, gave a message of support to the region. She emphasized the importance of researchers, regardless of age, ensuring the welfare and well-being of animals involved in health research, thereby ensuring their protection from any harm.

Moreover, the 1st day of training consisted of a series of informative lectures delivered by knowledgeable and experienced resource speakers namely Dr. Pastor C. Tumaliuan, Jr, Dr. Bryan Jerome R. Bassig, Dr. Ion James U. Mejia, Dr. Roel T. Calagui, Ms. Mary Ann M. Santos, and Dr. Kathlyn B. Cruz.

Thus, this training imparted a lot of knowledge on how to properly handle laboratory specimens where they will be put to test for the continuation of the training on Day 2, June 16, 2023. Similar training will be conducted for the students in the future.

Advancing Healthcare Together: Research Priority Setting Workshop

June 14, 2023 | The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Office II thru the Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) in collaboration with the Alliance for Improving Health Outcomes (AIHO) conducted a Research Priority Setting Workshop at NGN Grand Hotel, Tuguegarao City.

Moreover, the latter agency was commissioned by Philippine Council for Health and Research and Development (PCHRD) to develop the National Unified Health Research Agenda(NUHRA) 2023 - 2028.

Consortium Members Institution have discussed important research priorities that will advance Research and Development (R&D) in our region. The workshop set regional research priorities. Identified the key areas to focus on through interactive sessions, brainstorming, and open dialogue. These discussions will guide future research to ensure sustainable and transformative change.

The top 10 Health Research Priority identified for the region are:

1. Reproductive, Maternal, Child, and Neonatal Health

2. Lifestyle-related Diseases/ NCDs

3. Mental Health and Substance Abuse

4. Health Systems Strengthening

5. Infectious Diseases

6. Environmental health

7. Health Economics

8. Health of Vulnerable Population and Indigenous Cultural Communities (IPs/ICCs)

9. Food Security and Safety

10. Drug Discovery

Thus, with these health research priorities stated, it will be the basis for the construction of the Region 02's Regional Unified Health Research Agenda 2023-2028.

CVHRDC Executive Director Shares Expertise with Batanes State College

Cagayan Valley Health Research and Development Consortium (CVHRDC) just met with Batanes State College to discuss the findings of the Cagayan Valley Medical Center (CVMC) Review Ethics Board on their research proposal, thru zoom.

The meeting aimed to help the college revise their proposal and comply with ethical standards.

During the meeting, CVHRDC Executive Director Dr. Julius T. Capili shared his expertise and knowledge in research ethics, providing valuable insights and recommendations for the revision of the proposal.

Dr. Capili's extensive experience in research ethics has been instrumental in the success of CVHRDC's research programs. He has provided leadership and guidance to the consortium's members in the conduct of their research activities, ensuring that ethical standards are upheld and research outputs are of high quality.

CVHRDC and Batanes State College are both dedicated to advancing health research and development in the country. By working together and sharing expertise, they can ensure that their research projects will contribute to the improvement of health outcomes for the people of Region 2.
